Tips for LOIs and Applications
There are many effective resources, such as workshops and online guides, that can increase your knowledge and skill in grant writing. If your organization lacks this expertise, we suggest elevating your application’s effectiveness by researching best practices and following these simple tips from Cullen staff.
- Read and follow the instructions carefully.
- Note and meet the application cycle’s deadlines.
- Review the eligibility carefully and know that if you don’t meet the criteria, your application is unlikely to be successful.
- Be mindful of each question being asked and answer each part of it.
- Request a copy of the questions on the application ahead of time so you can map out your responses and where they best fit.
- Gather the information you’ll need to complete the application in advance of writing it.
- Write clear, concise responses to the questions.
- Avoid repeating responses and duplicating details across multiple questions. Use every question as an opportunity to tell us something unique about your organization and project.
- Use data to demonstrate impact, attendance, and efficiencies and other strengths.
- Avoid using jargon, and acronyms, and technical terms without first defining them.
- Communicate the sustainability plan for your organization and its programs (i.e. other funding sources that support your organization’s mission).
- Be clear on what and why the project/program is needed and who the beneficiaries are.
- Make your budget easy to decipher with clearly labeled sources and uses and budget line categories; date the budget; note the source and date of any prices/cost estimates included in the budget.
- Consider using the SMART criteria in your goal setting and objective development (SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound).
- Have a friend or co-worker read through the draft before you submit it to check for clarity and suggest edits.
- Reach out to Cullen staff if you need any assistance or would like us to read through your draft before you submit the LOI or Application.
